As the dog days of summer make there way ever closer the cooler temperatures are becoming few and far between. This past weekend was of course Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully you have a great weekend and enjoyed a good cookout or spent some time with family and friends. I ended up working most of the weekend. Monday I did a lot more work but I don’t really consider working out here on the off grid sun breaking free clouds treeshomestead to be work. It rained off and on most of the day. Despite all of the rain I still went outside and worked on the off grid garden planting okra, extending the fence, cooking out, working on my homemade wing chun dummy, and washing my truck! Yes I got a lot done despite the rain!!!

Stay tuned for Thursday’s show to see video of the progress out here in the off grid garden. You will finally get to see a lot of the projects I have been working on outside the off grid camper. Last years unbearable summer heat really made an impression on me. The hot humid temperatures of late summer can be extreme. This is why I have been working on as much as I can when the temperatures are still tolerable.

injury band aid guy
September 21st, 2015 by Off The Grid

Anytime your trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle off the grid relying mostly on only yourself for getting things done an injury car really slow you down. Out here working in the camper many things came to a very slow halt because about a week ago I hurt my hand. This brings up a very valuable element to keep in mind when your needing to get things done but can’t. That being an injury of any kind will more than likely slow you down from your normal routine as well as simply getting the job done any time you want to.

Stick man in the woods

The morning off grid was eventful as I woke up with yet another wasp in the camper and a good sized healthy snake outside before breakfast. No I was not eating snake for breakfast! lol Somehow the wasps seem to find their way into the camper during the day and depending on what time I get in they surprise me in the morning or as I’m looking out a window at night. Being out on mother nature’s doorstep here off grid snakes wander close to the camper from time to time. This morning as I was stepping out the camper door to make breakfast a halfway coiled up snake scared the you know what out of me! lol As I set my cast iron skillet down out of the corner of my eye the snake moved. The snake was brown with a diamond shaped pattern and about 2 1/2 inch diameter. Being only about two and a half feet away from my foot I was lucky to not have been bit.

I have only been out here off the grid in the camper for a short while but one thing has become very obvious. Anytime your trying to live in a remote location or off grid first aid needs to be a priority. A good first aid kit should be in everyone’s house no matter you live. Sustaining an injury makes the first aid preparedness mindset even more so a must If you have been following my journey off the grid you know that these episodes of the podcast have been catching up quick. Today’s podcast was recorded only about 3 weeks ago (August 30th). My hand is all better now and the small scar is a subtle reminder that even if you don’t want to slow down you may be forced to from time to time so just adjust. Taking a deep breath. Doing what you can time will pass quickly and hopefully when you are injured you will heal quickly so you can get back to work!

casual night 1Today’s show is more of a casual catch up after a very fast week with a lot going on. If your looking for good info about off the grid stuff this is not that kind of episode. Most of the shows here on Off The Grid Podcast are indeed about everything off grid but if your up for it I invite you to sit back and relax a spell. After another long day of busy I stopped just before midnight to record an episode for the podcast. With everything going on at work, classes, and life in general pausing to record an episode was a good thing. Yes I was tired, it was late, and I was about ready for bed. Putting a good LED headlamp on always lightens things up 🙂 So hopefully you can appreciate tonight’s casual midnight show after a very busy week!casual night 2

Work going good was a big plus because that meant more funds could be put toward repairing the off grid camper and preparing for winter. Friday I stopped by a yard sale and found two rain barrels along with some other useful tools to help when working off grid. Saturday meant more work. Sunday was a little bit more relaxed but with a minor injury from class my life was about to get a little interesting for the next couple of weeks. Yup I hurt my hand. Luckily it was not that bad so it would not be too long before I would be back to normal. Anytime you are trying to be more self sufficient working off the grid can be a bit more challenging when an injury forces you to slow down. By the way.. doing laundry becomes a little more challenging if your trying to do one handed. I had also signed up for a Reiki seminar on Sunday but was not able to go this time. For those that don’t know Reiki is basicly working with healing energy. For more info check out the link below in today’s podcast show notes to learn more. Fortunately I did make it out to the Reiki open house so it was a ice end to a very eventful week! It just goes to show that living on or off the grid there is never a dull moment when you stay busy and life tosses variables your way.

working on camper floor edges
September 14th, 2015 by Off The Grid

Good morning, good day, and good evening to everyone tuning into the Off Grid Podcast! Today I was at it again working in the camper with a dremel tool in hand. Mother nature threw me a curve ball though because when I woke up there were two wasps flying around inside my “tiny off grid home”. lol No mater what the weather nor curious insects that come to explore this strange new zoo in their neck of the woods (my camper) will keep me from making progress out here because winter is coming. So with my dremel tool, a pair of sunglasses, and a marker I was cutting some of the trim to add finishing touches to the new camper floor. The trim was about a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of working on camper floor edges 1aluminum angle iron made for covering the edge of stairs and doorways. I was happy with the new addition to the off grid project and the camper was starting to look better every day.

Despite the rare distractions of stinging insects and not always having the right tools for the repair job things always seem to work out. As far as I know I’m not allergic to bees / wasps but I was not taking chances. One wasp seemed to be fascinated by the central roof vent so that one was clear of my work area. The other one was lounging around in the back bathroom screen window. I was utilizing my time working on the DIY camper project up toward the front of the camper. Everybody was happy and we all had our space! lol Well the morning flew like time does out here off the grid and it was time for me to go. Yup.. one thing you must do out here in a camper with no AC is keep an eye on the temp. The thermometer hit 87 degrees so it was time to be smart in the hot humid summer heat by going into work. 🙂 All in all it was a good morning and with the couple distractions mother nature had in store I was still making progress. Things were going in a positive direction and the simple life off the grid is a happy one.
