repair off grid camper roof
April 22nd, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you like taking on a good DIY project then today’s video edition of the Off The Grid Podcast is right up your ally. Last summer I was facing the biggest fixer upper repair project I have ever taken on. Have you ever bit off more than you could chew so to speak? Have you every taken on more of a fixer upper project than you anticipated? Then welcome to my world! lol After finally getting the off grid camper out here the first logical repair seemed to be the roof of the camper. There was no sense in fixing or replacing anything else in this antique coachmen pull behind camper unless the roof kept things dry. When I started all of this last year on my journey to living off grid I had no idea just how much work was ahead of me. Today’s video episode of the podcast should give you some idea as to what its like with one of these old camper roofs in need of repair.

new gopro for off grid videos
April 20th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Join us today as I share an amazing weekend and a very special gift that two listeners sent in. If you have been a long time listener you know that my journey from the average life in the suburbs to one out here off the grid has been eventful to say the least. After recording these Off The Grid Podcast episodes for over a year now its sometimes hard for me to know just how my efforts to share this experience are affecting you the listener. Two listeners Brent and his wife Sandy sent me an incredible gift. They gave me a GoPro!

Have you ever had a weekend that was so amazing that if someone asked you about it you almost didn’t know where to begin describing it? Well the GoPro was only the beginning although I held off opening it until the following Monday.. so I felt like a kid waiting patiently for Christmas! lol It is very late or crazy early (almost 3 AM) right now as I type this and I am ready to catch some Zzzzzz! So I will leave the rest of this great weekend for you to listen to in today’s show of the Off The Grid Podcast. Thank you again Brent and Sandy! I will be putting the GoPro to good use very soon so stay tuned for some cool new off grid videos. 🙂 Now in Levi VISION! lol

living off grid
March 18th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Have you have ever had a dream that you held onto for years with hopes of one day making it a reality? Then found yourself finally attaining that goal pausing for a time to examine the reality of your new found accomplishment for what it is? Well that has been on my mind a lot lately.. even more so now that it is about a year after I began my journey off grid. Today’s show is more in line with the journal side of the podcast in that I am sharing some of the psychological aspects I’ve recently come to recognize when living off grid. Living off the grid has had its ups and downs laced with many challenges both personal and physical. Mother nature always seems to keep me on my toes with the multitude of various wild animal antics, insects, and constantly changing elements of the weather. All in all it seems as though I am entering a new phase on my walk of life as I have found myself closely examining what it is to live off the grid. Aside from the obvious like not having running water or power everything else seems to be a little more clear now when looking back to my life when I was on the grid. I will save most of this for the conversation in today’s show so you can hear for yourself because I want to make sure this episode is posted at a reasonable time (this afternoon as opposed to late at night). So please stay tuned to the end of the show for a treat if you love the sounds of nature. Thank you again for joining me on this journey and for continuing to listen! 🙂 In case you were wondering the featured image for today’s podcast episode was taken last year on a trip to Shenandoah national park up on the mountain side. It was so beautiful up there!

more logs from woods
March 4th, 2016 by Off The Grid

The clouds of winter are parting as I have been feeling very fired up lately with a renewed sense of optimism for the future. If you remember last year about this time I was going through some rough times in almost every aspect of my life. At the same time I kind of felt like the days were counting down to sort of like waitinglevi artwork in anticipation for Christmas in getting my future off grid camper out here. Little did I know my journey had just begun in more was than one. With this being episode 101 of the Off The Grid Podcast I have been feeling increasingly energized these last few days with the fact that over 100 shows are now under my belt. Looking back there have been many challenging days. Every one just like each new day offers not only the opportunity to learn but also personal growth as a person. One big lesson that seems to have slowly made its way to the surface of my mind is that it seems like I have been spinning my wheels a lot of the time. Yes.. literally at times while unknowingly mudding in my little Geo Metro! Ok so that was a joke but really did happen several times. Seriously though.. this last year it seems as though I have been spinning my wheels in a financial sense. Half the time I had the money and half the time I had “time”. Unfortunately I rarely had both. So this has lead me to an epiphany of sorts that the time has come for me to ask for your help. I am working on creating a Patreon campaign. What is that you may be asking? Patreon is a platform that bridges the gap between content creators and those wanting to help support them. It is for artists, musicians, and content providers of all kinds. As I mentioned in today’s episode of the Off The Grid Podcast I will be creating one soon so please stay tuned for more info. Until then if you would like to help support this show please help me spread the word by telling a friend or taking a moment to rate the Podcast on iTunes! Thank you again so much for listening! I really appreciate it! 🙂

March 2nd, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you have been a regular listener to the Off The Grid Podcast then hopefully today’s show is a good treat. Last week in episode 99 I had mentioned that I was going to be doing a live broadcast of the show over the weekend in celebrations for the 100th episode. After a few minor technical difficulties I managed to kick the show off right on top of the off grid camper. Why up there you may be asking? Well as I quickly found out the reception out here is not always the best. Researching real quick on YouTube I found a way to make an antenna from a branch and my charging cord for my cell phone. micro machine monster truck lamboIt may work for some people but didn’t for me so I climbed on top of the off grid camper roof. Once I got up there and settled in the Periscope app seemed to work just fine. If you would like to watch the live broadcast videos or see future ones please follow me on my Periscope channel! 🙂

For today’s Time Travel Tuesday segment I dug deep into my memory box for a little toy car I modified as a kid. Flash back to the year of 1987 when Micro Machines were all the rage. Back then I had a number of these micro machines including cars, trucks, and yes monster trucks! I also had a Lamborghini. 🙂 As a kid I was always curious as to how things worked. One day I took one of the monster trucks apart with a philips head screw driver and replaced the body making it a Micro Machine Lamborghini monster truck! This was 29 years ago and I had a lot of fun modifying my new toys. If you would like to hear more please check out today’s Time Travel Tuesday segment. If you are enjoying this new addition to the podcast please let me know and if not that is ok too. Either way i would love to hear from you! As always thank you for listening to the podcast! 🙂

merry christmas from otgp
December 25th, 2015 by Off The Grid

With today being December 24th that means it is also Christmas eve! For most of us I would guess the holidays are a very busy time of year. As I found out once again good time management took a back seat until it was too late. Yep. Christmas is here folks! Its finally time for all your hard work, all the hours you probably spent decorating, cooking, and stressing out over just the right gift to give to pay off. So settle down by the fire or wood stove if you have one and take a deep breath. I have been promising for the last 2 or 3 episodes of Off The Grid Podcast to include a video with today’s show here on the site. christmas tree in middle of woodsThe video(s) included are not what I had in mind but still none the less I hope you enjoy them. By the way if 30 minutes of video is not your cup of tea after listening to the podcast then fast forward to PART 3 of the videos to see the Christmas tree I decorated out in the middle of the woods! lol Um.. that would be a spoiler alert!

After being disappointed in myself for not having the lights up in or around the camper I decided to make the best of what I had. Just before recording today’s podcast a listener chimed in on Zello to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. After chatting with Brent for a minute he said they were looking forward to the Christmas video. I explained to him that to my disappointment I had not recorded a Christmas Eve video for today’s episode. Afterward I got to thinking and realized this was Christmas DANG it! I can’t disappoint my listeners on Christmas!! That would be like promising a gift and then not giving one.. so here you go. Like I said earlier please forgive me for going a little off the cuff on this one because I had not taken time to write any show notes. By the way about 5 min after finishing the recording I was called into work early so this has indeed been a very very long day! As I type this now it is technically Christmas (after midnight!!!).. so MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!! lol 🙂 Part 1 of 3 videos are included below here for you as promised. As soon as the 3rd video is done uploading I am heading out to settle down for a good nights rest! Until next time please stay safe and enjoy this wonderfully special time of year. I would like to wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas! 🙂

December 10th, 2015 by Off The Grid

Today’s episode of Off The Grid Podcast is all about you questions, comments, and feedback that listener just like you have emailed in about. As you know I have only been off grid out here in the camper for less than a year but in this short time I have really learned a lot. As more new listeners find the show our audience and off grid community will continue to grow right along with the new episodes. 🙂 Every once in a while you guys and galls take the time to email. THANK YOU! It means a lot to me every time I see a new email from listeners just like you because it is a reminder that someone is listening. While I have seen the numbers grow on website views I never really know if “you” are listening. lol Do you remember back when you first started listening to the Off The Grid Podcast? Well try to put yourself in my shoes for a minute. I started recording these shows months before I started posting them up online. At the very beginning back in July I started posting shows up 7 days a week to get these episodes current. When I started this whole off grid adventure earlier this year I was posting these episodes knowing that chances are nobody was listening. Fast forward to today’s show number 78 and it is kind of like a runner getting a second wind by being able to do another listener feedback show! lol So when you take the time to email it is a great opportunity to share some of your questions and awesome info as well. As you start to email more of your questions, comments, suggestions, and feedback I will continue to share theme here with listeners just like yourself. Thank you to everyone that has taken time to email. I will always be grateful!

Some of the questions from today’s Off The Grid Podcast show are listed here:

  1. Some really good questions, comments, and info about installing wood stoves in RVs / Camper.
  2. Does your camper have a propane heater?
  3. If not hunting dogs nearing the camper then what puts you on alert out there in the woods off the grid?
  4. Do you ever get “creeped out”? If so by what?
  5. Does fire attract animals?
  6. If you were to hear people approaching how would you respond?

If you have been listening to the show for a while no doubt you have probably heard me mention Trucker Carl. He has emailed a lot of good info in the past. Just recently he emailed another great link to an article about building super simple root cellar. Essentially all you need is a 55 gallon barrel, a shovel, and some time to dig. I checked out the website and it looked like they also have a LOT of really good info about survival prepping and just being prepared for SHTF scenarios across the board. You can check out the easy do it yourself prepper root cellar project here on 101waystosurvive.com. The site has a lot of articles for the DIY guy with easy to follow instructions for the how to.

morgan silver dollar pocket watch
November 19th, 2015 by Off The Grid

This past week a theme seems to be reoccurring in my daily life about making the best use of time. With winter fast approaching and this being my first year off grid in the camper I am quickly realizing that I am just not ready! Hello once again and welcome to another time saving episode of Off The Grid Podcast.. well um kind of. OK so let me explain the premise for today’s show. The last few days at work have been challenging to say the least due to a last minute rush on someone else part trickling over into my life causing undue stress and food for though about the whole “use of time” thing. At least it gave me a hard but long overdue reminder in a lesson I had forgot long ago.. but that is a story for another time. Combine that with a few other moments still lingering from this past weekends lesson of collecting firewood and you have what in my mind is the universe trying its best to tell me something. It is time to kick things in gear and be the Ant not the Grasshopper!

Hopefully most of you are familiar with the old story of the Ant and the Grasshopper so I won’t waste our time explaining that one. 🙂 Last night after getting in late I put my trusty LED headlamp on and set to work getting everything outside of the camper ready for the following days forested rain. Putting my dusty brown work gloves on is always a sign that work was about to begin here off grid in and or around the camper. Grabbing two ten poles I had a large tarp up across the roof and was at ease knowing that at least some of the minor leaks would be avoided this time. Next item up for business was to straighten up a little around the camper in order to make space to get a few things out of the path of next day’s rain. With several trips the recent items from my lost and found box of camping items from springtime were once full again. The large black storage tote was emptied so that everything could dry out. It was ironic that everything was going back into the tote to keep dry. lol Sure enough it is now the next day and it has been raining all day long! I woke to the sound of rain drops across the roof so making good use of time the night before was well worth it. If you have not already listened to the episode for today’s Off The Grid Podcast I was running late this morning so time was on my mind again. So if this show was a little short that was why. Next time will be better and more thought out you guys. Until then stay safe, try to use your time wisely, and have a good one!

solar heating project
November 4th, 2015 by Off The Grid

If you tune in to Tuesday episodes of Off The Grid Podcast you know that I normally talk about the previous weekend projects. Thanks to you it seemed like a good idea to make a listener show with your comments, questions, and feedback sent in by email from you guessed it.. listeners just like you! This being episode 67 of the show now November already it almost seems like yesterday when the podcast started its journey off grid as well 🙂 I started recording these episodes back in February before moving into my camper and living off the grid. After a number of setbacks and hurtles I finally made it and so on that day I decided it was time to start actually posting the episodes that had been stacking up for 6 months prior. After all what would be the sense in creating then posting podcast episodes if I never actually made it off grid? Which leads me back to today’s show about your questions, comments, and feedback.

Over the last few months the podcast has really gained some momentum online and that is all because of YOU! Some of you have started sending in some really great info, thought provoking comments, and invaluable feedback. After reading a number of your emails it quickly became apparent that I am not as “alone” in this hair brained idea of desiring a simpler, self sufficient, and more fulfilling lifestyle “off the grid”. A long time listener (does 67 episodes count? lol) Trucker Carl from Michigan sent in some very good info about how to winterize camper windows. by simply building a frame around each window out of 2 X 4s and some clear plastic. This would act as a super cost effective way to double insulate your windows from the freezing outside winter air. He had a number of good ideas for surviving the cold weather months in a camper.

Last week Brian sent in some invaluable information on using a commonly available Buddy Propane heater to keep your camper, tiny house, or small log cabin warm in the winter. What made his propane heater experience so valuable? His insight is extremely valuable because he said they used the Little Buddy and Buddy propane heaters for 100% of their heating for 4 years! Think about that for a second. Over those four years he was able to get a very accurate information about how well they worked along with the cost to operate one of the Buddy Propane heaters. Brian said that over those four winters they found that on low it kept the average temperature at 65 degrees F. Connected to a larger 20 pound propane tank the Buddy Propane heater would last about a week and a half. At $60 a month for even the coldest months and not freezing your you know what off sounds good to me! lol Yes tea lite candles are more affordable but I can tell you from my own personal experience its still quite chilly! After a little research I found that the Buddy Propane heaters are designed to shut off if it senses low oxygen. Still you should always play it safe in any tiny house, log cabin, or camper by installing a carbon monoxide detector. While I do not own one of these I will probably be buying one soon!

With this last weekend being a very productive blur checking the email our most recent listener feedback comes from Tom. He says that he started listening at episode 37 and had a number of questions. Tom asked are you in VA or NC? All about the about batteries.. 6V or 12V? Acreage or small parcel? Can your camper fridge run off electric or propane? He also asked about the off grid camper. Yes I realize this is still a fairly new show but sometimes it takes an email like this to remind me that new listeners are tuning in all the time so a little back story is needed from time to time. Hopefully I answered some of this in today’s show but if you would like to learn more about Off The Grid Podcast please check out the site www.offthegrid.tips for all of the back episodes of the show. As always if you have additional questions please feel free to email me anytime! Life can be extremely busy at times.. we all know this. Especially when your on the grid for work or working harder to get yourself off the grid! For this I am very grateful and really appreciate each and every one of you taking the time to do so. If you are a regular listener you know that part of the reason for my slowing the episodes down from 5 to 2 days a week was to begin posting more videos of everything out here off the grid in an out of the camper, along with some really cool solar projects. In appreciation for you all taking the time to send in your questions, comments, and feedback I wanted to post a quick video of the camper as well a preview of a solar heating project I have been working on. Please keep in mind that yes.. I have been taking step by step video of this solar heating project for the future too! 🙂
