statue of liberty coin
February 24th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s episode was recorded just after midnight. Why so late you ask? Well it was technically very early for a Tuesday episode because I stayed up late to share this special show with you. This is a special episode because I put my LED head lamp on and went walking out into the woods in search of the sound of a frog symphony. Each night for about the last two weeks or so the frogs have been growing in numbers. The incredible amount of rain, sleet, and snow we have had this way over the last month has created plenty of flooded areas out in the woods for the frogs to sing to one another. The thing is the growing numbers of these little amphibians make for a really cool change to the sometimes absolute eerie silence of some winter nights. Its nice to know that spring is on the way! If you tuned in early on when I first started posting episodes for Off The Grid Podcast I spoke about the crickets and frogs last year. At times the frogs were deafening. Mother nature it seems has decided it was time to begin prepping for spring with a beautiful nightly symphony of frogs in the forest outside the off grid camper.

Also with this being a Tuesday episode statue of liberty coin 100the new segment “Time Travel Tuesday” item is a special one to me. Flash back about 30 years ago to the year 1986. Back then my dad got me into collecting coins as a kid. One day a Sears Catalog came in the mail. I was pleasantly surprised when my mom told me that she had ordered the catalog specifically to get the Statue of Liberty coin for me. The thing is this is not just any coin. This copper coin contains some authentic material from the Statue of Liberty. How you may ask? If you are a history buff you may remember that in 1986 they were doing some major repairs to one of our nations great monuments. With Sears being a forward thinking company they saw an opportunity with the coinciding date. Sears was founded in 1886 and while they were refurbishing the Statue of Liberty in the year of 1986 this made for a “100” bit of history to align with in celebration for the company as well. I hope you are enjoying this new Time Travel Tuesday segment. As always if you have anything to share please email me anytime. ..um speaking of “100” episode 100 is coming up for the Off The Grid Podcast her in another week. Man it is absolutely amazing how time flys!

off grid full super moon stars
September 18th, 2015 by Off The Grid

Good day and good evening everyone! Today’s Off The Grid Podcast was recorded August 29th out here under wonderful nights sky the moon and stars. Tonight was a special night out here because it was my first super moon here off grid. What is a super moon or Supermoon? If your asking don’t feel bad because I just learned what it was just recently as well. A Supermoon or super moon is when the moon is actually closer to the earth than at any other time of the year. We usually get about 3 super moons a year on average. A super moon can appear 14% larger than a regular full moon and can be up to 30% brighter as well. So if you looked outside one of these superfluous bright nights and was wondering that was why. The heavens above were indeed a masterpiece to behold with my wondering eyes looking up as I paused for a short while before bedtime to admire this super bright full moon. Most of the time in the past I would look up and wonder once in a while just how many stars were out there that I could not see because of the city lights. Of coarse the nights sky was always beautiful but when you go a ways out like out here off the grid then the stars really come out! Its kind of like listening to your favorite songs with a cheap five dollar set of headphones and then upgrading to a one or two hundred dollar pair. WOW! Sometimes you don’t know what your missing until you come face to face with the clarity of being off grid. lol The city lights blind you from the truth that there is a really beautiful nightly masterpiece out there most nights.

Earlier this evening I fired up the rocket stove as the sun was going down. Just as I got my little off grid grill fired up the stars came out to play with the super moon not far behind. The warm inviting camp fire smell began to fill the air as the stars above slowly graced the heavens while the sky dimmed to a deep dark blue. The sights, the smells, and thought of a good nourishing meal set the right mood for the full super moon’s entrance on the If you have been following my off grid journey thus far you know that I have been having some issues with the batteries holding a charge. This means no refrigeration here in the off grid camper unless I buy ice every day. No refrigeration also means that if I want to have as little waste as possible I need to eat as much as possible of whatever I cook. This brought up a memory from one summer as a kid at my grandpa’s house one summer. The story is best told by podcast so I will leave the description for the ears to hear. 🙂

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while you can miss it.”

Later that night after cooking out and enjoying a good meal along with seconds I took a few to record today’s Off The Grid Podcast episode. In recording today or tonight’s podcast it was nice to settle down for a few before sleep time as the very large bright super moon began to come up over the trees. Finishing up a new and refreshing drink made from water, lime juice, and honey I headed out the door of the camper. The crickets were reciting their normal nightly symphony here in the forest. Walking around the off grid camper, up the ladder, and to the roof I settled down just to enjoy the silence with the super moon above. It was nice and peaceful as you can hear. If you missed the one in August then your in luck because we have two more super moons this year. The next two are on September 28th and the last one being October 27th. So if you can slow down long enough on one of those two days, experience the magic above that is a super moon with all the nights stars playing a fantastic majestic backdrop reminding us to rest once in a while. If you find yourself in the rat race of modern society please take a few to recharge your batteries. It does not matter if your on or off the grid. Clear your head, take a deep breath, enjoy the simple things in life, and you will feel a lot better. 🙂

cooking rocket stove
August 31st, 2015 by Off The Grid

If your like me you love your cast iron. I was enjoying a spectacular night under the stars while cooking some “viddles” off the grid on the rocket stove! Viddels is a funny way of saying FOOD if you didn’t catch that 😛 lol. Cooking off grid with a good old fashioned cast iron skillet on the rocket stove here under a brilliant night sky was as good as it gets! I had only been out here in the camper for about a month now but time was flying so fast. This opportunity to simply slow down for a late night skylight dinner anticipating the satisfaction of a full belly was a good one. Making the best with my time when trying to simultaneously get things done rebuilding the camper and needing to prepare for winter meant any time cooking on the grill would be appreciated!

cooking ecozoom rocket stoveOut here off the grid mosquitoes are huge! Compared to the pesky ones I was used to these were about 2 – 3 times larger. Seriously! Yes off grid mosquitoes can really bug you! On some nights you can almost get carried away.. umm. Ok so I was joking about that last one but yes they are very big and very aggressive! lol So I was all suited up with blue jeans, a light long sleeve shirt, an LED headlamp, and a mosquito net for my head. My only safe zone was close to the fire by the grill where the mosquitoes seemed to view it as an immediate no fly zone. lol

A few years ago I spent the money and got an EcoZoom Rocket Stove. After watching a number of videos over a couple of months I was sold on the big idea in a small package. What is a rocket stove? EcoZoom zoom zoom what!? If your asking coking on ecozoomyourself these questions your not alone so don’t feel left out. A rocket stove is a super efficient “grill” / stove that allows you to use any twigs, small branches, leaves, pine cones, and anything else small you can find in your back yard or nature that will burn for fuel. Once you get the rocket stove going there is virtually no smoke. The little off grid cook stove is so efficient it burns all of the combustible wood gases to. The EcoZoom is a very well made rocket stove. The only down side might be the high cost.. relatively speaking. One of the main factors I took into account became apparent very quickly was the savings in money switching from countless bags of charcoal and the occasional backyard grill replacement to this heavy duty upgrade. If your going off grid or already living off the grid then a rocket stove is a very economical option to grilling and cooking out. If your funds are limited I would strongly suggest making your own out of common bricks or cinder blocks. I will post a video soon and link to it here on how to make a rocket stove out of cinder blocks.. It is super easy!!!

sundown sun going down
August 24th, 2015 by Off The Grid

After another fast day of many time was flying so I decided to have a snack under the stars on top of the off grid camper. There was a refreshing gentle breeze going as the crickets and frogs put together a symphony below. The night sky was a mix of stars, scattered slow moving clouds, and distant flashes above from heat lightening. My feet were hanging off the side and the breeze along with being up on top of the camper kept the bugs in check. The mosquitoes were not that bad up that high so it was a relief. I took some time to enjoy a snack after moving a few things out to the camper before the move off grid.

Its important to simply slow down from time to time and appreciate the world around you. Looking up at all the stars out here (off the grid) in the middle of nature was a constant reminder that I was wanting a telescope again. When I was a kid I had a telescope. It was really cool searching the heavens with a new set of eyes or at least one eye open. lol Back then I was still living in the suburbs so the nights sky was no where near as clear as out here. Out on the off grid land it was a good ways away from city lights. This was excellent because city lights probably hide more than half of the stars where as out in the country they are literally.. all over the sky! lol.  So next time you get a chance take a look up and admire the night’s sky in all its glory. If you have a telescope get a closer look. 🙂
