walking in the creek
August 5th, 2016 by Off The Grid

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to go up north for a family reunion. Now this trip wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies but it was a good time none the less. The 12 hour drive up included an unscheduled and unwanted 2 hour scenic route through the mountains of Pa. Yup you guessed it.. I got lost when the sun went down so I found myself taking the scenic route around the mountains and through towns so small they only had a couple of traffic lights. It felt good to finally reach my destination and I went straight to bed. The next day family reunion activities were in full swing. The food was excellent and everyone had a good time catching up on how things have been. After we all ate it was time for games like trivia, toss grandmas purse, and everyone favorite “dirty” bingo! Next we had the family auction. Yes it was a lot of fun and I really look forward to going each year when I can.

Every once in a while a long road trip to visit family in Pennsylvania is a great reset for me. Despite my humble abode (the off grid camper) I am still very much a part of this “normal” suburban society on a daily basis with work and all. Going to visit my family up north reminds me of just how much a difference there is in culture from region to region. For better or worse there is always something to learn and life to experience. Up there I was reminded of what small town America is all about. People in general seemed to be nicer, have more manors, and an overall better set of ethics quite honestly. Just an observation. 🙂

groundhog
April 15th, 2016 by Off The Grid

When you are not used to seeing certain things in a new environment then you are in for a few surprises every now and then. One such surprise struck me as odd last fall as something caught my ear. I stepped outside of the off grid camper and as I looked around searching for the source of a chewing and popping sound the ground moved! I quickly ran inside the camper and grabbed my knife, flipped the video cam on, and snatched a shovel on the way back out. At first I thought it might be a snake because there are plenty of them out here off grid. Then I realize that it was chewing through roots and moving way too quickly to be a snake. It was a groundhog! Hopefully you enjoy the video as much as I do. For a city guy not used to seeing things like this it was a pleasant surprise to see the ground moving as the little groundhog went about his business. Quickly realizing that there was no danger I left him alone to dig and went about my day. In the months that followed he burrowed many a paths around the off grid camper naturally irrigating the ground. lol

take 5
April 13th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Recently I found myself in a conversation that caused me to reflect back at my journey over the last year to living off grid here in the camper. After working so hard to remove myself from the rat race of urban city life (at least after work) I was reminded that even in a small way that the wonder I have of nature can fade if I am not careful to appreciate life each day. Its not that hard really when you think about it. Most of us go about our lives without so much as a thought regarding the beauty that is all around us. Ok so each of us are at different stages in life and chances are some are more or less in “better” places or environments. A quote comes to mind if you find yourself not liking where you are in life..

“Until the pain of same exceeds the the pain of change you will sit in the same”

In a nutshell this is where I was at about a year ago. No matter how crummy some days or nights were I still took time to walk outside many nights and look up at the stars. I made good use of many a Saturday mornings cooking pancakes on the Rocket Stove. Sure I was living in the suburbs then but I took time to appreciate nature in my own back yard at the time.. and I loved it! So again if you are still listening to today’s episode of the Off The Grid Podcast please take 5 to stop and appreciate the life you have in the world around you. If you identify strongly with the quote above then this might just be an even better reason for you to consider taking time once in a while to practice the attitude of gratitude. Another favorite quote comes to mind.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while you could miss it.”

All of us at one time in our life have experienced the insane moment of realization when (fill in the number of years here ___ ) that pass us by only to think in the hear and now that time flies so fast. Why it was only yesterday when… So the next time you find yourself caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life please take a moment to pause. Please consider taking 5 minutes to breath calmly, reflect on where you are in life, and appreciate the world around you. You just might notice something new.

floating logs frozen water ditch
February 13th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Join us today as I slow down to take refreshingly adventurous walk around an icy pond that just appeared in the woods after the unusually large amount of rain and snow. If you have been keeping up with my mini-adventurers out here in the camper and off the grid you know a LOT of precipitation over the last month has graced flooded frozen pond woodsthis area. We have all had times in life when unexpectedly everything gets busy. I recorded today’s episode of the podcast while I was out enjoying a cool walk down the path and making my way around the flooded areas. This “Adventure Saturday” starts out following a set of little bunny rabbit tracks in the snow. The rabbit tracks started over by my very frozen compost pile near the off grid camper and lead all the way down the path. I’m not going to spoil it for you but I take a leap of faith over where the dilapidated bridge used to be. Hopefully you enjoy today’s show as much as I did experiencing it with microphone in hand! 🙂 As always thank you for listening and if you have anything to share please send me an email from the link below in today’s show notes.

flooded path in the woods
February 12th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s quick video post was made as I headed out for a walk down the path I so fondly speak of. After a solid couple of days and nights of rain the open field and parts of the path were completely flooded! This is a follow up post and video for an episode of Off The Grid Podcast earlier in the week about Bugging Out for the Weekend show number 94. Please enjoy and share if you like the vid. Thanks for watching! 🙂

snowing off grid on the camper
January 20th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you have ever lived anywhere when the icy cold grip of winter winds chill you to the bone then you can probably relate to today’s episode of the Off The Grid Podcast. In the last few days it seems that winters icy cold grip has really take hold of this area. Freezing temperatures dipped down to 16 degrees. Keep in mind that when you are trying to stay warm inside of an old camper with no electricity or water then you need to use your critical thinking and common sense skills even more so. I had hoped to have my little pot belly cast iron coal / wood stove in by now but it has not happened yet. I do however have an awesome Little Buddy Heater. If you are looking to live off grid and need a little info about heating during winter’s cooler months then this episode will not disappoint. i shared some recent info and numbers with the temps both inside the camper, outside the off grid camper, and in combination with running a small portable propane heater. Yes you can learn a little bit by listening to this chilly winter episode. lol

Today’s podcast was recorded at the office after a very long and late day that turned into night. If you noticed my energy was low it was because I pulled a double shift and then recorded the podcast for this episode. As I mentioned it was very late when recording so I will keep the wording for this post short.. Sleep is important!!! 🙂 The video will be posted here on the website tomorrow. Please stay “tuned” for the update! lol Until next time stay safe, please stay warm on these bitter cold days, and enjoy some of the beauty that only snow can offer. As always thank you for listening! If you have any questions, comments, or other great info to share please send me an email. I would love to hear from you! 🙂

tree no bark
January 8th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Here is that video of the strange tree in the middle of the woods with no bark that was supposed to be posted yesterday. Its an odd tree because at the base you can see that it is actually one tree split growing as two trees. It did not look like an animal or any insects took the bark off so I curiosity was peeked. Sorry about not having this cool video up with yesterday’s podcast Episode 86: Listener Feedback and Strange Things in the Woods. Enjoy! 🙂

snake eats spider
September 24th, 2015 by Off The Grid

Have you ever seen a snake climb a tree or eat a spider? If not then keep reading and listen to today’s episode of Off The Grid Podcast because I just saw a little gardener snake eat a spider out of its web! Ok this might sound like scene out of a horror movie but this is real life and I was fortunate enough to have captured it on video. Since my short yet adventurous journey from the suburbs to out here living off the grid I have seen a lot of natures wonders. Many huge insects, birds, frogs, lizards, salamanders, bats, possum, foxes, deer, you name it! As the saying goes just when you think you have seen it all.. Well let me back up a bit and start from the beginning.

snake eats spider 2I stepped out of the off grid camper on a nice sunny Saturday, grabbed a shovel, and started digging for a new compost pile when I was surprised by a snake that went out on a limb to eat a spider. I just started digging when out of the corner of my eye I saw a little green snake to my right that had climbed up a tree about 3 feet off the ground. There was a huge spider about the size of your thumb doing its thing in the web when the two gladiators clashed. Im not sure what kind of spider it was but as luck would have it the very next day the same kind of spider took over the old spider’s web so I got a pic for you guys. This ambitious little green gardener snake had climbed a tree, literally went out on a limb, and ate a spider right out of its web! This truly was one of natures great David and Goliath moments. Unfortunately the spider lot this round in the wilds of here off the grid outside of my camper.

I was grateful to have been at the right place at the right time to have witnessed this because it truly was a spectacle only to be seen here off grid in the forest. If you want to watch the snake with the spider in its mouth then check out the video for today’s episode of Off The Grid Podcast on YouTube here. As you can see in the video the snake continued to climb up about 6 feet up the tree after its arachnid mid day snack. It was orange, brown, yellow and black measuring about the size of a thumb. Does anybody know what kind of spider this is?

Show notes from today’s Off The Grid Podcast

  • Today’s lesson: Look up at the tree branches above because snakes do climb trees and eat spiders! lol
