flooded path woods
February 11th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Depending on which part of the country youflooded path in the woods are in you may or may not have been in the path of this last weekends major rain storm. Out here off the grid my camper was right in the middle of it with a relentless couple of days drenching the ground with a LOT of rain. It rained for a better part of 2 or 3 days. Was there ever a time you really needed to go somewhere but couldn’t because your vehicle was not as ready to go as you were? With the tremendous amount of rain in such a short period of time I grew even more aware of the possibility of getting my car stuck in the mud. So I decided to bug out for the weekend! As I left Friday morning I found myself driving down the road thinking about bugging out to avoid getting stuck in the mud.

After bugging out for the weekend to family’s house I began working on one of my goals for February. This particular goal (going to bed early and getting up earlier) is one that I have struggled with most of my life. In general I have just accepted the fact that I am a night owl by nature. They say that most people are either early birds or night owls.. I fall into the latter category. This may seem fairly straight forward but for whatever reason has eluded me until now ..or at least this last weekend I was reminded of this. It seems that the key to this goal of switching up my sleep schedule came down to one thing. I had to exercise my will power to avoid any electronics before bed. This means no computer, cell phone, video games, etc. All in all it was a very busy weekend and a great one as well. There is no sense in typing everything out so I will leave some for today’s podcast episode.

setting goals off grid
February 3rd, 2016 by Off The Grid

After looking around the off grid camper for the last month I have slowly realized that I need to set some goals for February. If you are like me trying to stay on track can be difficult. Setting goals for yourself and following a few basic steps can help you stay on track even if a task or challenge seems overwhelming. Here is a quick list of my own to do list for this month:

  1. Prepare the garden!
  2. Clean, sort, & organize both inside & outside the off grid camper
  3. Dismantle the solar project & organize parts for something else
  4. Get back into a fitness routine
  5. Stop staying up so late & start getting up early
  6. Build a bonfire & enjoy a quiet night to myself under the stars

Everybody has things they need to get done. Looking back at my efforts I realized that part of the challenge I seem to fall through on time and time again is related to completion of whatever it is. I have listened to a number of goal setting podcasts, read various articles, and again tried different things over time. Two things that seems to hold everything together so we can complete our goals seems to be to 1. Wright your goal(s) down (which can be very simple yet oddly difficult) and 2. Share your goal(s) with a friend or family member that can in a way hold you accountable. For the second one I am not talking about just telling someone that you are going to do something or that you want to do something.. its more along the lines of telling them you are serous about getting “it” done and even asking them to ask you about your goal once in a while. It holds you accountable! 🙂 If you want a sneak peak ahead at the happenings out here for the Off Grid Podcast then I will be setting goals for each month this year. Keep an ear out for the episodes posted at the beginning of each month for whats up next! Thank you for listening! 🙂

old log bridge
January 14th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you are like me chances are you enjoy being outdoors and when the weather is right its time to be outside. Well recently it seems like I have learned a new lesson or two. The main one being that I need to pay more attention to how I am using my time. Even more so to simply beware of falling off track and getting complacent! Living off grid absolutely has its advantages and by this I am referring to the abundance of peace and quiet away from the massive organized chaos that everyday life in the city can be if you get stuck in the hamster wheel on a regular basis. Over the last few weeks it seems as though I have been going through a bit of a reflecting process where by I have found myself being unproductive and for the most part and too complacent. It seems that at least to a small degree I have temporarily forgotten what it was like enduring the suffocating heat of the summer months.

As the cooler months of fall and now winter took over the off grid landscape just outside my camper window so did the easing up of unbearable weather temperatures. I now have a little Buddy Propane Heater that does and awesome job of keeping me warm in the off grid camper. The only thing is that now that the basics of survival are covered I recently found myself watching too many movies and getting less and less done out here. They say that in order to overcome or correct a problem challenge you must first be able to recognize it. Well today I have a very clear understanding of the fact that I have found myself in the complacent zone. It is time to get back on track and to get my but in gear doing things that NEED to get done NOW because if you have been paying attention time does not stop. Spring and Summer are literally right around the corner and will be here before we know it. Last year I missed out on one of my new loves.. gardening! This year I will have a garden filled with all kinds of awesome fresh veggies! I have also been looking forward to getting some chickens. None of this is going to happen unless I get back on track and stay productive now!

Again I apologize for not having today’s episode up on Tuesday. The internet was down. It seems that this too is another lesson. A lesson that I need to be prepared for these episodes possibly a day or two before they are to be posted so they will be up on time despite any technical difficulties. Another quick side note about the video I mentioned in today’s Off The Grid Podcast.. the video with Hatchet Jack (the possum)will be posted up here on the site tomorrow. If you have something to share or any questions please drop me a line and send an email. I would love to hear from you! Thanks again for your patience and for listening!! 🙂
