cool cast iron skillet mold pan
September 10th, 2015 by Off The Grid

A fitting good end to the crazy week takes me out hunting for deals at the flea markets and this weekends major score was great for cast iron cooking! πŸ™‚ This weekend I found a LOT of very cool cast iron mini skillets, heart shaped cookie mold, a ginger bread man cornbread mold, and a unusually odd 4 in 1 cast iron pan with a hinged lid. If your curious then click on today’s featured image of the collection of cast iron cookware. The picture will enlarge for a better view. We all know the coveted WagnerΒ  cast iron skillets but if you can not find what your looking for or can’t afford the higher antique price tag then save money at your local flea markets and yard sales. I did find a lot of smaller useful finds that will definitely come in handy here in the off grid camper. I found a super small garden hose water pump that you pewer with a drill, some aluminum flashing, and a few other little gems for off grid projects. If you like cooking with cast iron you know that they can last a lifetime. You also know that depending on what you buy you can spend a bit of money on your quality cast iron collection. Save some money and look for some local deals in your area!

pull up camper carpetThis has been a very good yet busy week and the weekend tuned out to be no different. If you have been following Off The Grid Podcast you know this year has been flying by fast! Episodes are being posted at a super fast pace to get caught up with current recorded shows (today ;). After checking out some of the local big box stores as well as discount outlets in my search for flooring I decided to look online. Craigslist turned out to be where I found what i was looking for. More progress is being made on the floor. I pulled up the ancient carpet making room for the new flooring in the off grid camper. There was a deal for some almost brand new flooring (floating floor) for only $50 so at that price I was saving a lot of money. Most of the flooring and tiles I looked at were about a dollar per square foot. The deal I found was less than 50 cents a square foot. So yes save money by searching craigslist too.

A weekend at the flea markets in springtime means finding more tools for working on and cleaning the off grid camper. If you have been following the podcast then you now I love hunting for deals at the flea markets. Today was one of the first good days with warm spring weather in this area. Combine that with the fact that most of the people with stuff at the flea markets are looking to sell after a long winter and you can save a lot of money! Yes I found a few good deals.

Ironically just after checking out the flea markets I attended a Minimalist group meeting. If your asking what is minimalism or what is a minimalist your not alone. If you don’t know Minimalists are people who are on a path to make their lives better and create more meaning with less “stuff”. There were about a dozen people at the Meetup from all walks of life. Everyone had different versions of what minimalism meant to them. Having fewer possessions has really made more and more sense during this move. As I take this step from living in an average size house in the suburbs to living off the grid in a camper minimalism is sounding very good right now. You can’t take it with you when you check out here on earth so um.. yeah.

Today’s episode of the Off The Grid podcast was recorded back in April along the way into the camper. Please post if you have a question or comment and again thank you for listening! πŸ™‚

Today was another cool day of hunting the flea markets and buying things for the camper. I found a couple of fire extinguishers which will help with overall safety in the event of a fire. I also found a very small and quite unusual small heater. The heater is about the size of a piece of bread lol. While the heater is AC it does seem like something that will hopefully not pop a breaker like some of the larger ceramic ones. Big news of the day!! I bought 4 new (used) tires for $140 that should fit the future off grid camper. I took a spare tire from the camper to match bolt pattern so everything should fit right.

Its not what you have its what you know.

Today was the day of deals for the Off Grid camper as I searched the flea markets and Craigslist. It was Saturday so it was a good day to hunt for useful items to make my journey off grid a smoother one. I found 3 deep cycle batteries on Craigslist! This was huge! The batteries were kind of an important piece of the off grid puzzle.. I had the solar panels but needed a way to store the power. I also found a 500watt power inverter brand new in the box at the flea market for only $15 and a pair of work overalls for only $2! Several other treasures were found and everything will come in handy when away from the suburbs in the camper!

My goal of being off the grid by the 1st had come and gone but did not happen (Today’s show was recorded back in March). I was able to move out after 3 late days of packing and cleaning. I would guess that most of us have way more stuff than we even realize. Well it was official.. I moved out and was staying at a friends house on the couch until the camper was ready for my journey off the grid. It was not a good feeling “crashing on the couch” but I was grateful for a warm place to stain on these still ice cold nights. Life continued with more change and at least I was one day closer to moving off grid.. even if this was a small setback due to the camper not being ready on time. Humbling times like these remind me of a quote:

Turn life’s stumbling blocks into stepping stones.

Its SATURDAY so I headed out to the flea market for stuff for the Off Grid camper. Forget the fact that it is freezing cold with lots of snow and ice on the ground. Its deal hunting season at the flea market because I need to save money for this upcoming move into the camper. In preparation for the off the grid move I have also been sorting through a LOT of stuff that has accumulated over the years. So I took several boxes of miscellaneous cloths, odds and ends, kitchen items, household nick knacks, and whatever was not wanted to a couple of guys at the flea market. You can save a lot of money when buying used. Today’s episode was a short one so stay tuned next time for more because each day brings me closer to actually being off the grid in my new camper.

Today’s podcast was recorded back in February 2015 along my journey before I was “Off Grid”.
