Today’s episode was recorded back in May on the way out to pickup the off grid camper. Yes today was the day! It was finally time to get the camper out to the land. I had a long day of driving ahead so I figured this would be a good opportunity to reflect on the last few long yet fast months. My journey thus far from an average life in the suburbs to one off the grid in a small camper has been eventful to say the least. I had been recording plenty of podcast episodes, taking pictures, and lots of videos for this documentary I was making about going Off Grid. For what ever reason these first few months of the year have been one of the most unusually busy, ups and downs, surprising, challenging, emotionally charged, shifting, and add a dash of drama kind of “hello this is the universe calling” sort of times. This really has been the year of all years for personal change in my life. Let me take a deep breath.. ok. lol Family, friends, and loved ones all really surprised me in many ways. Some have been extremely supportive of my journey off the grid. Others I was completely wrong about in how they would be there during stressful challenging times. My now ex-girlfriend whom I loved with all my heart broke up with me on Valentines day weekend. Who does that?! Long time friends shocked me the most by showing their true colors (not a good thing.. but for the best in the long run). All of this coupled with the many ups and downs along the way of my journey to living off the grid just after my 40th birthday. Woo hoo! lol
When life gives you stumbling blocks turn them into stepping stones.
Thinking more about the land itself where the camper was going brought up many challenges. One of which was ticks. Aside from a few here and there over the years I had never really had to deal with them but now it was time to face this dilemma head on. Its almost like it was tick season.. if there is such a thing. The ticks are horrible out at the off grid land. Remember this property is set out in the middle of the woods so mother nature is in charge. I did not want to do it but ended up using some insecticide down to try and make the ticks more manageable. It did help a LOT by the way! Counting down the hours when my cousin and I would be driving back with the camper in tow more thoughts came to mind.
The long drive gave me plenty of time to think. With something as deeply personal like a recent breakup turned my thoughts to love. (Its ok I’m over it now 🙂 Remember this episode of Off The Grid Podcast was recorded back in May). Meeting new people, going out on dates, discovering shared interests, and the whole dating world came front and center when I realized I would be single again.. and living off grid for the duration of this documentary. Yup we are all searching for love. After my last breakup I decided to create a dating web site just for those of us that are either wanting to go off grid or are already living off the grid. Did I mention that I am a web designer as well? (Add that bit of knowledge to your trivia side of the brain). lol
I am adding Off Grid Singles as a sponsor for the podcast and also asking for your help to spread the word. Finding your future partner who will be happy living off the grid just got easier! Off Grid Singles is a ground breaking new dating website. This is the first dating site ever just for the off grid community. If your looking for love and realized just like I did how difficult it was on the average dating sites then your not alone. Actually finding someone that wants an off grid lifestyle can be challenging to say the least. The dating web site is for “off grid” singles looking to connect with and find each other. Finding someone that will be happy living off the grid can be hard enough. Have you tried any of the average dating websites lately? When you wake up inside the Matrix and realize that a majority of potential singles are still stuck in a closed mindset it limits our dating pool. There is nothing wrong with the “white picket fence” lifestyle. Chances are that is not what you want.. neither do I. The dating site is brand new. Again this is why I created the dating site so if you like this show please help support our community and check out www.OffGrid.Singles

What is off grid living like? How do you live off the grid? What do you do about power and water? The questions are endless and my journey has just begun. Like any new project the thoughts of “where do I start” begin to make their way thru my mind as I do my best to think of EVERYTHING that is “off grid”. This is NOT a small task! Sometimes it is best just to begin and work the details out later while your engrossed in the process because life never stops. You learn hard lessons fast!
At the start of a journey your desire is greater than your talent and sometimes the time is just so your talent can catch up.
While going off grid is not exactly talent based it is heavily knowledge and skill based. By that I mean when you step out of the overly protected encyclopedia sized volumes of rules, regulations, and idiotic nuances made up by elected officials to protect ourselves from um.. ourselves then you actually realize that everything on this earth is alive. Nature will quickly wake you up to the fact that you are alive and you must learn fast, adapt quickly, and acquire new skills to survive. Every day off the grid you are alive! If your using your brain then you want to not only survive but thrive. I started watching all the off grid and survival videos I could find. I listened to as many survival podcast shows that seemed to be level headed (there are plenty of “out there” shows out there lol). I read all the off the grid related books, catalogs, and websites. All of this research over the last several years coupled with slow integration of things like gardening, canning, solar panel projects, and other cool stuff into my suburban life helped me to get prepared for life off grid. The knowledge and skills learned from my successes along with failures taught me many things. A major gem of wisdom was the saying for this podcast…
Life is in session. Are you present?
I started all of this in some ways years ago by following my interests and hobbies. Fast forward to a couple of years ago my mom passed away. After abruptly being faced with the fact that both of your parents are no longer on the earth make you think about your life.. A LOT! So I made a goal to be off grid by the time I was 40. Fast forward to 5 months ago just before my fortieth birthday life pushed back and all the pieces started to fall into place. Fast forward to now.. The first episode of this off the grid documentary podcast about “going off grid” is now up. If you like this kind of thing then I strongly invite you to join me on my journey. I have 5 months of incredible ups and downs both personal and otherwise to share. I started recording podcast episodes, off grid videos, and documenting my journey from the safety of the suburbs to off the grid in a camper. Life has just begun. Adventure has begun. If you a student of the universe then life is now in session. Are you paying attention?
Its not what you have. Its what you know
I don’t exactly know where this off grid journey will take me but for now it starts out in a modest little fixer upper of a camper in the middle of the woods. Anytime you take on a path and direction that is life altering you are in for great change. You will learn a lot! The people in your life may surprise you. You will grow as a person and you will be humbled at times. If you open your heart, your mind, and your eyes you will see things in nature that life will only show to those with the courage to step off grid. It can be scary at times. Nature is incredibly beautiful filled with lessons with every step you take. This journey off the grid is like stepping out of the living room lightening fast right into a reality TV show where YOU are now experiencing everything as opposed to simply watching it. For the first time everything is goosebumps skin tingling, fresh crisp air, sharp new sounds, and everything is actually real! The ultimate safety of suburbia is now gone. The tables have turned and you are now a visitor in nature’s raw environment with animals, insects, reptiles, and all that mother nature has with the seasons. If any of this interests you then I hope you will join me. This is the boldest thing I have done in a long time and arguably quite possibly THE boldest thing. Thank you for taking the time to listen and read. If you like this please share it with friends, post a link on Facebook, or post a question here for this episode. I would love to hear your feedback and answer any of your questions. We learn something new every day! 🙂

If anyone reading this knows the first thing about going off the grid or living an off grid lifestyle then you know its a lot of hard work just getting there! This seems to be lesson one as my journey from the suburbs to out a ways into the country has proven to be a long one. Patience. It is now 4 months and counting from my original goal of being “off the grid” was set for March 1st. Being only one person I have been diligently been working like the steady ant in the story doing my best this last year to actually be off grid. Yes its amazing just how much you learn along the way and as is with everything in life.. nothing is simple! Quality time is always needed for anything worthwhile in life that you want to learn or attain. Moving from the average American lifestyle to something completely foreign and new requires among many things.. patience.
Slowly but steadily the days turned into weeks. The weeks quickly turned into months. On the bright side things have been moving a lot faster now that the camper is here where I can work on it. It was only a couple of weeks ago that the camper was hours away so going to work on it was a well planned all day affair. Either way I am now filled with a new sense of urgency coupled with a solid motivation because I actually have something to work with! Patience has given way in part to um.. staying busy while being patient!
Lets back up a bit so all of you reading this now aren’t lost. Long story short / “shortish” the journey to off grid living goes a little something like this.. I have been wanting to live in one of those cool off the grid partial earth sheltered homes with all the convenience that the videos on YouTube showed for years now. The people always looked happy and the homes always look so extraordinarily decorated with everything cool! The unique earthy nature appealed to the creative artist in me. The fact that all of the homes were very sustainable was another big plus. So all around I was impressed and wanted to live some for of that off grid lifestyle.
I spent countless hours researching info, watching videos for ideas, and surfing the net for anything in this circle that was off the grid living. I researched everything solar panels, rain water collection, alternative energy, earth cooling tubes, cutting edge gardening ideas, alternative building techniques and more. There were earth sheltered houses, straw bale houses, yurts, earthships, cobb buildings, tiny houses, and several other variations.. they all looked so cool!! There were also people living in campers, RVs, and trailers. Living in a camper wasn’t my first choice but it seemed to be one option to the quickest way to go off grid and learn along the way. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.. yeah sure the videos were all cool but they left out a few important details. All of the ups and more importantly the stumbling blocks that life throws your way. What do you do with stumbling blocks? Turn them into stepping stones of course!! You learn a lot along the way too! 😛
Life happens and you learn something new every single day! So I decided to document my journey off the grid with this podcast, a website (www.offthegrid.tips), and yes an off grid documentary about the whole experience. Again its now been over four months and I have been recording audio for the Off Grid Podcast, taking pictures for the blog, and also taking lots of video along the way! So I have a lot of material for podcast episodes and shows.. none of which are up yet.. I strongly emphasize YET! I have been podcasting for a few years now so the whole concept of an Off The Grid Podcast is on the way!
On a side note while going through this whole shift in life along the journey off grid I found many people in my life either coming or going with surprising haste! My family stayed constant but I did get a lot of funny looks (your crazy!!!) when they found out I was going to live off the grid. Long time friends and acquaintances surprised me the most but it was for the best I guess. With everything else going on the universe threw one more good curve ball my way.. my now ex-girlfriend. I became single :/…don’t you just love the modern singles market? lol OK not to get too off track I created a dating website (I’m a web designer as well) for people wanting to live this “off grid” lifestyle because I realized if I was going through all of this crap then others were as well! Off grid singles or those wanting to go off the grid needed a place to meet, greet, and hopefully fall in love. I created www.offgrid.singles because average dating sites were full of everyone else but it was all “white picket fence” keep up with the Jones’s kind of people. There is nothing wrong with that its just now for those wanting an off grid lifestyle. lol
Why did I choose the domain name with “.tips” instead of “.com”? Because the dot com was taken and after thinking for a while on what it was I was looking to create I decided if people were hopefully going to learn from my successes and failures then the new dot tips domain extension was best. If you like this kind of thing then please share this with a friend. Do you have an idea or valuable life lesson about off grid living that I could learn from? Please comment so we can all learn! The site is about learning you know!!
