cleaning camper
April 8th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s episode goes back to one summer weekend last year as I was getting ready to clean the off grid camper. Was there ever a time in your life when you moved into a new house and found you had a momentous cleaning job ahead of you? At first when I first got the old camper I was simply star eyed and looked past the huge amount of work ahead of me.. mostly out of inexperience and ignorance of an off grid project like this. Now that I have been out here a while the off grid camper is still a work in progress. Those first few months were a major lesson for me in underestimating just how much cleaning both inside and out were needed. Not to mention replacing and repairing the parts of the floor, roof, areas inside, and flat out building things that I wanted. All before winter! but that is a story for another episode! lol For now sit back and enjoy the two videos for show 111 of the Off The Grid Podcast as I begin by cleaning up a bit. 🙂

old log bridge
January 14th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you are like me chances are you enjoy being outdoors and when the weather is right its time to be outside. Well recently it seems like I have learned a new lesson or two. The main one being that I need to pay more attention to how I am using my time. Even more so to simply beware of falling off track and getting complacent! Living off grid absolutely has its advantages and by this I am referring to the abundance of peace and quiet away from the massive organized chaos that everyday life in the city can be if you get stuck in the hamster wheel on a regular basis. Over the last few weeks it seems as though I have been going through a bit of a reflecting process where by I have found myself being unproductive and for the most part and too complacent. It seems that at least to a small degree I have temporarily forgotten what it was like enduring the suffocating heat of the summer months.

As the cooler months of fall and now winter took over the off grid landscape just outside my camper window so did the easing up of unbearable weather temperatures. I now have a little Buddy Propane Heater that does and awesome job of keeping me warm in the off grid camper. The only thing is that now that the basics of survival are covered I recently found myself watching too many movies and getting less and less done out here. They say that in order to overcome or correct a problem challenge you must first be able to recognize it. Well today I have a very clear understanding of the fact that I have found myself in the complacent zone. It is time to get back on track and to get my but in gear doing things that NEED to get done NOW because if you have been paying attention time does not stop. Spring and Summer are literally right around the corner and will be here before we know it. Last year I missed out on one of my new loves.. gardening! This year I will have a garden filled with all kinds of awesome fresh veggies! I have also been looking forward to getting some chickens. None of this is going to happen unless I get back on track and stay productive now!

Again I apologize for not having today’s episode up on Tuesday. The internet was down. It seems that this too is another lesson. A lesson that I need to be prepared for these episodes possibly a day or two before they are to be posted so they will be up on time despite any technical difficulties. Another quick side note about the video I mentioned in today’s Off The Grid Podcast.. the video with Hatchet Jack (the possum)will be posted up here on the site tomorrow. If you have something to share or any questions please drop me a line and send an email. I would love to hear from you! Thanks again for your patience and for listening!! 🙂

camper mess before cleanup
September 2nd, 2015 by Off The Grid

It has been close to a month now since my move to off the grid and with everything going on I have not been cleaning much inside the camper. That was about to change. Today was cleaning day and I was in the camper taking some extra time this morning to clean up a bit. First up was a good size stack of egg shells. I like making french toast and my “power pancakes” in the mornings so I had a stack of egg shells that had been drying and needed to be moved. I use the egg shells (crushed up) as a natural calcium supplement in the garden. Half of the difficulty when your working in a small space like a camper is just finding a place to put things! lol Once I can get everything fixed with the floor and front half of the camper finding space to store stuff will be less challenging.

Moving more items around I found several things I had forgotten about or lost in the move off grid. Yup.. if your listening you can tell the camper is a little cramped for space because everything was so unorganized! Several 2 X 4s were moved up to the back wall over the kitchen counter sink. That is one good thing about these old campers.. most of the time they have really been designed well to maximize space. After a short while of cleaning up in the camper I unearthed a treasure! lol I found my power cord for the video camera. The power cord was something I had been looking for because with all of the documenting my journey off grid and repairing the camper the battery was done! It was time to record some more video for documentary! lol

One thing you get good at with these old campers when moving in general is organizing. Stacking and packing seemed to be a critical skill these last few months. I attribute my advanced stacking and packing skills to years of playing Tetris as a kid! lol If your not good at organizing when you start a move into a camper you will be an expert when your done. All in all the move to off grid has been a good one. Cleaning up the camper and sorting through all the stuff today reminded me that I had come a long way. The vision is clear with the prospect of a humble little camper being all cozy and clean in the near future just in time for the cooler months. 🙂

new rubber roof cracked
August 20th, 2015 by Off The Grid

The cleanup has begun and the future Off Grid camper was in the middle of a major cleaning overhaul! Tonight I was back at it in the camper putting some gloves on and gearing up for a serious clean job of the really dirty camper. It was about 10PM and my homemade AC unit was blowing in the background. Yes even this late at night it was still hot in the camper! It was a super simple contraption made up of a Styrofoam cooler, a few DC powered fans, and a few soda bottles of frozen ice. My homemade AC worked but not that well. It was only putting out 4 to 5 degrees cooler air. It was 84 – 85 degrees with 81 degrees air from the air conditioner. Up until now the main goal was to fix the roof. After another long day I was again looking forward to the precious few hours to put toward working on the camper. Earlier I stopped by the Dollar Store for some basic cleaning supplies like bleach, mold & mildew remover, and a small assortment of other helpful stuff for this seemingly momentous task. The camper was only 28 foot so how bad could it be? lol

The last time before leaving the camper I set off a bug fogger. I read the directions thoroughly to make sure I knew what to expect and heaven forbid what to do if anything went wrong. After closing all of the windows, vents, and propping the door open ready to go I set the canister in a glass baking pan toward the center of the camper. Fast forward to today’s Off The Grid Podcast episode and the camper was ready for a good cleaning.

With all the recent progress my focus started to turn to other things like a working fridge and getting the floor repaired. The floor was going to be a serious undertaking and I did not know it yet. This episode of Off The Grid Podcast was recorded back in late June just before the adventure in the camper was REALLY set to begin! lol The place where I was staying at (on the couch) was soon to come to an end as a new deadline of July 1st to be off the grid. Thanks for listening I appreciate it!

  • Lesson for today. Don’t put the roofing material on too thick all at once 😛
  • I will post some pictures and a video of my homemade AC here soon (will edit this when up)
