listener feedback brent epi 103
March 11th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s show is a special one because after doing the Off The Grid Podcast for about a year now one of the listeners sent in a video. Brent took the time to email in a video and also had a great safety tip to share for anyone living off grid or hikers venturing out. Anytime you are out a good ways from society then you need to play it safe. Brent suggested sharing an important message for campers, hikers, and anyone venturing off the grid. He said it would be a good idea to know your GPS coordinates in case you ever needed to dial 911. This is a really great idea because a lot of times if you venture out away from the roads it could be hard for emergency personnel or first respondents to find you. If you know your GPS coordinates then if you ever needed help it could be there sooner rather than later. So this is one thing I will look up and keep on hand as well.

Brent also brought up a good point for the Off The Grid Podcast that I had not thought of. A few episodes ago (Show 101 & 102) I mentioned that I was working on incorporating a Patreon page for listeners that would like to help support the Off The Grid Podcast. The thing is I completely forgot that some people might like to help but at the same time may not be fond of a subscription based format. This was something I had not taken into consideration until now. Brent suggested that he and his wife might be interested in purchasing a walking stick / cane or two. This was another great idea and it gives me an excuse to work on something I enjoy doing. My dad got me into making canes when I was younger. I still remember being in awe admiring some of his craftsmanship. The beautiful spiraling wood grain where a vine had been elegantly swirled up looked like something a genuine wizard would have by his side. 🙂

If you are following me on Periscope I broadcast a live video a few hours ago. The video is the one mentioned in today’s podcast. I decided to show it there because after remembering I would be waiting for about 3-4 hours for it to upload a good nights rest sounded like a better option (its about midnight now and I am ready to go!). So if you would like to check out the video please click on the link below in the show notes for Periscope or you can check it out once the internet gods let me upload in a reasonable time frame again! lol 🙂 Thanks for listening and as always if you have anything to share please send me an email!

tree no bark
January 8th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Here is that video of the strange tree in the middle of the woods with no bark that was supposed to be posted yesterday. Its an odd tree because at the base you can see that it is actually one tree split growing as two trees. It did not look like an animal or any insects took the bark off so I curiosity was peeked. Sorry about not having this cool video up with yesterday’s podcast Episode 86: Listener Feedback and Strange Things in the Woods. Enjoy! 🙂

carved walking stick
December 22nd, 2015 by Off The Grid

Today’s episode of Off The Grid Podcast is not so much about anything suchcarved walking stick as little solar projects but more along the lines of this busy time of ear we call Christmas! It seems like from time to time we all go through phases of over indulgence and this last week has certainly been a good description for mine. I went out to a friends house over the weekend and lucked out by going home with a big bag filled with some rejected Christmas cookies! My friend’s mom was making a LOT of Xmas cookies but several batches came out looking more like Reindeer poop! We all got a good laugh out of the fact that the dough strangely flattened out to something between that of a cookie and a potato chip. After sampling a few I tried convincing the frustrated cook that they were really very good and the kids would love them! Unfortunately my friend’s mom wanted a cookie that looked more like a traditional store bought cookie. I suggested giving them a clever name like “Reindeer Sliders” or Christmas Bark” but as I mentioned I happily went home with a big bag of Reindeer Poop Cookies!!! lol 🙂

Next up with this recent over indulgence seems to be a exploring a re-found interest in carvingcarved walking stick top am making custom walking sticks / canes. Yesterday was off to a great start as I took a walk in the earlier part of the day out into the woods with my bow saw in hand. Venturing off the path out here off the grid I quickly found a cool tree that turned out to be great for (2) walking sticks and a Harry Potter style kids wand! lol If your wondering where I am going with this stick with me for a minute. Later that day (last night) after a long day of work I found myself with some energy not yet ready to go to bed. So as I stepped outside to enjoy the peaceful and unusually warm winter night air I decided to carve a little on one of the two walking sticks I found earlier. Hours later with the haze of much needed sleep setting in and my stomach beginning to growl I called it a nigh with the completion of my newly carved walking stick. I am seriously thinking about offering these “Off Grid” canes and walking sticks sometime in the future for sale online to help with the podcast. 🙂 As an artist I have explored many mediums over the decades. Being out here off the grid with the golden opportunity of a lifetime with access to these incredibly unique canes is one that I can’t pass up. Crafting canes like these working with both positive and negative space is a new challenge and at the same time very rewarding. They have so much character! 🙂 Don’t you think so? If you missed it check out last episode of the Off The Grid Podcast where I talked more about these canes in keeping an eye out for opportunities that are around you in your environment. As always if you have something to share please feel free to post here for today’s show or you can also send me an email with your thoughts, questions, and cool off grid related ideas.

vine around tree cane
December 17th, 2015 by Off The Grid

Keeping an eye out for opportunities in your environment can be easy when you are already exploring and looking for resources. If you are already living off the grid or are planing to do so in the future making the absolute best use of your time is critical. Ever since the colder weather took care of the ticks in this area I have found myself venturing out exploring more and more around the camper. As it turns out the surrounding woods are a golden opportunity for someone with the eye of an artist and the ambition of a crafter. It seems like everywhere I look there are beautifully ornate trees with vines wound up and around them. The thing is most of the time you see one or two of these scattered along the side of the road in your travels. vine around tree caneThe fact that a majority of these trees or future really cool looking canes are all over the place out here within walking distance of my off grid camper makes for an excellent opportunity to make some wonderfully ornate walking sticks.

While going out on my walks in the morning I realized that several things were being done all at once which ultimately will save me a lot of time. If you are living off grid or are looking to do so please make note of this. Going for walks and exploring the area around your home serves many purposes at once. Yes you are exploring and getting exorcise but it also gives you the opportunity to look for resources such as firewood or building materials. If you are into making crafts see what else you can find in your area to create something. Making the best use of time when your out and about is not only easy but is just makes sense. In my case I have found a LOT of future walking sticks, canes, princess wands, and Harry Potter like wands as well. There is enough to keep me busy for a long time out here off the grid in the enchanted forest! lol 🙂 A quick search online showed that there does not seem to be a lot of money to be made but as a hobby $35 – $250 per waking stick / cane would be fun none the less. Alas with everything I have going on out here at least for now I will need to keep this one in the back of my mind until I have some.. free time.
