Episode 66: Ghosts in the Graveyard & other real Halloween ghost stories

I survived halloween

Halloween is only days away so today’s podcast I wanted to share some real life true ghost stories I have heard over the years and also personally experienced. If your a kid at heart then today’s show is right up your alley with all the ghosts, poltergeists, and strange bumps in the night. The inspiration for today’s episode of Off The Grid Podcast came up in a casual conversation yesterday while talking about ghosts in a book store. Noticing her nifty Halloween decorations I jokingly asked if her book store was haunted. To my surprise she said yes it was and then proceeded to tell me a series of chilling real ghost stories of haunting times at her book store.

Last year my ex-girlfriend, her brother, his girlfriend, and I were hanging out sharing spooky ghost stories one late evening after work. The best real life scary story was the one about the ghost in the graveyard. A number of people were gathering outside of the apartment complex where my ex-girlfriend’s brother’s girlfriend used to live several years earlier. Directly across the street from the apartment complex was a graveyard. On this particular night as the small crowd gathered something ghostly was quickly pacing back and forth in the horror like fog. She described everyone stared in a combination of awe and funny doctor nurse pumpkinfright as the thick fog parted and swirled as the ghost danced eerily from side to side between the gravestones. Eventually everyone left but it was indeed a true ghost story to be passed down from everyone there that spooky night.

Back in the day when I was a kid we lived in an old haunted apartment in Pennsylvania with a very active ghost. If your a big history buff or know about some of these older small towns your more likely to hear of a haunting or few. When I was about 4 or 5 we lived in this apartment that what seemed like every night something would happen. When my mom would call us to bed half the time we would look to the kitchen to see if the ghost would succeed in its nightly attempt to break a plate in the sink. Another time that stands out is one time my mom, sister, and I were sitting around the kitchen table when a cup started moving slowly on its own. Even at that age I tryed to figure it out.. looking at angles for water, checking for strings, and even looking under the table for a magnet. None were to be found so it had to be the ghost. Supposedly there was a man that died in the apartment right before we moved in. We all thought it was him but never knew for sure.

If your a regular listener you know that my mom passed away a couple of years ago. Which leads me to the most recent haunting I had experienced personally. My sister and I would talk by phone but had not seen each other in a few years. Every once in a while she would tell me stories about some of spooky sounds, the smell of cigarette smoke, and strange happenings at her house. After finally getting a chance to visit her I was looking forward to checking out the ghostly haunting for myself. It would have been nicer to visit on more joyful terms (we were getting together to say goodbye to our mom passing) but we were both looking forward to catching up. While I was there a couple of strange things did happen. I’m not going to spoil it for you if you have not listened to today’s podcast but I will say I managed to record a ghost toughing the microphone! Yes really. The ghost was quite active picking thinks up and gently setting them back down in the bathroom by the mirror. The microphone was set down in the hallway so it did pick up a few things. So the next time you hear something going bump in the night or sit around with your friends telling ghost stories know that just because you can’t always see them they are there! 🙂 Oh.. and one more thing. If you find your house suddenly haunted ask yourself what used items or objects you may have recently brought home from the antique store, thrift store, side of the road, or ..gulp.. flea market 🙂
