Have you ever stopped to think and ask yourself what you are thankful for this Thanksgiving? This is something I have been contemplating even more so lately with the hands of time counting down to yet another turkey day. Scratch that! Today is now Thanksgiving day 2015. This marks another milestone in my journey from a not so long ago life on the grid with readily available power, water, and utilities on demand to a completely different lifestyle minus the previously mentioned. This is my first major holiday living off the grid. For the most part when someone wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving you probably just smile and wish the same in return but have you really thought about it? About exactly what it is you are thankful for? For me finally taking that scary leap of faith earlier this year to living off the grid has really given me a new outlook on life. I lived what many would call a fairly average lifestyle. Work wise the 9-5 daily grind was good knowing I was bringing home a decent wage. Fast forward to the past couple of years with doors closing / loosing that job, and then struggling between not so good part time work and the pull of wanting to be your own boss made for a challenging life in general both emotionally as well as my personal life. I do however always try to practice the attitude of gratitude and remind myself that in life there are no problems.. only challenges and the glass is always half full!
“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.”
The quote above was meant to share some humor with you this holiday season. It also points to the fact that we all need to remember that sometimes “we ourselves” could easily be on the other side of that quote as well. lol I am thankful for so many things. It really is hard to list all of the things that you are grateful for when there are so many. Luckily I am still within a reasonable driving distance to family and friends so I was able to spend this special day with loved ones. Sitting down at the table for Thanksgiving dinner with those you have know for for many years or since the day you were born conjures up many memories. Only a short time ago my family and friends got the news that I wanted to live off grid in a little camper with no power or water halfway out in the middle of nowhere. Many jaws dropped and for a short while it seemed like my friends and family though I had lost my mind. If someone were to ask what I was thankful for this Thanksgiving I could easily run down a list of the obvious.. family, friends, loved ones.. that have always been there for me and will be there in the future. They help you up when you have fallen down or leave you there long enough to learn from your mistakes. They provide love and guidance at times as well as support when your reaching for your dreams way up in the clouds. Good friends, family, and loved ones may not always see the world through your eyes. Just remember that 9 times out of 10 they mean well and hopefully they will be there when it counts.
“You are essentially who you create yourself to be and all that occurs in your life is the result of your own making.”
I am grateful to be of sound mind and body with the intellect, courage, and talents to see me far in my pursuit of happiness while hopefully learning what is needed this lifetime. You hear the whole “mind, body, & soul” thing from time to time. I am thankful to have my health along with foresight to utilize the time I have here on this earth to explore exactly what it takes to live off the grid. I am still very much a rookie to the whole off grid living thing but again I hope I always retain the attitude of gratitude out here in this micro slice of the wild just outside the camper door. once again for those of you reading this yet still not picking up on Captain Obvious in the camper.. living off the grid with all of life’s page turning daily challenges, to next chapter seasonal preparations, and get ready for next “what now” moments.
“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.”
If you ask me to try my best by summing up that which I am grateful for in a single word it would be LIFE itself. I am thankful for the gift of life along with all of its countless experiences, lessons, and challenges that life has to offer each day. Every morning we wake up to life continually offering each of us the opportunity to grow. It is through life’s rarely understood complex nature of processes and mysteries that our path is reviled. Sometimes while learning life’s hard lessons we stumble falling down shortly there after. Life’s stumbling blocks turn into stepping stones if we have the eyes to see the days path in front of us while giving thanks for each experience. So the next time someone wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving ask yourself what you are grateful.
