repair off grid camper roof
April 22nd, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you like taking on a good DIY project then today’s video edition of the Off The Grid Podcast is right up your ally. Last summer I was facing the biggest fixer upper repair project I have ever taken on. Have you ever bit off more than you could chew so to speak? Have you every taken on more of a fixer upper project than you anticipated? Then welcome to my world! lol After finally getting the off grid camper out here the first logical repair seemed to be the roof of the camper. There was no sense in fixing or replacing anything else in this antique coachmen pull behind camper unless the roof kept things dry. When I started all of this last year on my journey to living off grid I had no idea just how much work was ahead of me. Today’s video episode of the podcast should give you some idea as to what its like with one of these old camper roofs in need of repair.

groundhog
April 15th, 2016 by Off The Grid

When you are not used to seeing certain things in a new environment then you are in for a few surprises every now and then. One such surprise struck me as odd last fall as something caught my ear. I stepped outside of the off grid camper and as I looked around searching for the source of a chewing and popping sound the ground moved! I quickly ran inside the camper and grabbed my knife, flipped the video cam on, and snatched a shovel on the way back out. At first I thought it might be a snake because there are plenty of them out here off grid. Then I realize that it was chewing through roots and moving way too quickly to be a snake. It was a groundhog! Hopefully you enjoy the video as much as I do. For a city guy not used to seeing things like this it was a pleasant surprise to see the ground moving as the little groundhog went about his business. Quickly realizing that there was no danger I left him alone to dig and went about my day. In the months that followed he burrowed many a paths around the off grid camper naturally irrigating the ground. lol

cleaning camper
April 8th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s episode goes back to one summer weekend last year as I was getting ready to clean the off grid camper. Was there ever a time in your life when you moved into a new house and found you had a momentous cleaning job ahead of you? At first when I first got the old camper I was simply star eyed and looked past the huge amount of work ahead of me.. mostly out of inexperience and ignorance of an off grid project like this. Now that I have been out here a while the off grid camper is still a work in progress. Those first few months were a major lesson for me in underestimating just how much cleaning both inside and out were needed. Not to mention replacing and repairing the parts of the floor, roof, areas inside, and flat out building things that I wanted. All before winter! but that is a story for another episode! lol For now sit back and enjoy the two videos for show 111 of the Off The Grid Podcast as I begin by cleaning up a bit. 🙂

prepping off grid wood core garden bed
April 1st, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s video episode of the Off The Grid Podcast ventures out into the forest collecting wood, bags of leaves, digging a trench, and yes making a wood core hugelkulture garden. Living off grid has many benefits and also many challenges as well. One of the challenges of not being tied to municipal water supply quickly becomes apparent if you enjoy gardening. Most traditional gardens require you to water almost daily. If you want to have a garden off grid then you will need to explore other options when it comes to keeping your garden watered. Hugelcultur or wood core garden beds are an excellent alternative to traditional methods of gardening because they require substantially less watering. If you have been following the podcast you know that I tried this thinking outside of the box idea several years ago. At the time I was living in the suburbs with an average size back yard. I was absolutely amazed at just how little water the garden required ( I only watered the garden 3 times that year!) Fast forward to this year being my first year gardening off the grid and it was a no brainer that this is how my garden would be done this year. Today’s video of the off grid hugelkulture wood core garden is more or less a compilation many clips I videoed over the last few months. Preparing the wood, soil, compost, and collecting numerous bags of leaves from the side of the road is all about to pay off with this years garden. Later on I will be posting longer videos showing each step of the process for the off grid hugelkulture garden. For now please sit back and enjoy a quick snapshot of all my hard work up until this point. lol If you would like to view this video on YouTube check it out here. 🙂 As always if you have any questions, comments, or feedback for myself or the show please email me anytime! Thank you for watching!

brewing beer off grid
March 25th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today on the Off The Grid Podcast we try something different. Instead of simply audio I have a video PART 1 OF 3 brewing chocolate peanut butter beer last year on the Rocket Stove. It was indeed a strange brew! Up until this point a majority of the podcast episodes have been primarily audio. Yes I have been working on posting shows here and there in video format for those of you wanting to actually see whats going on but today marks the start of something new.. video episodes. So if you have been following the show for a while and heard me mention a few times about the video making and brewing chocolate peanut butter beer off grid hopefully this will be a treat for you. Today’s video was recorded last October as I was making / brewing beer off grid that I named “Off Grid Brew”. I have been making beer, wine, and mead for about 3 years now. This micro brew turned out to be a very special Chocolate Peanut Butter beer indeed. When you have now power or running water things can be challenging when it comes to making something like this. The fact that I the temperatures fluctuated from 50 or so degrees at night to about 80 degrees during the day had me a little worried about just how it might affect the yeast. For a month I waited patiently as the saying rang true.. only time will tell. If you like this video please stay tuned and check out the future videos as well. This was only part 1. If you would like to learn more about the brewing process and what all went into making this chocolate peanut butter beer please check out these shows:

blue sky forest
March 2nd, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you have been a regular listener to the Off The Grid Podcast then hopefully today’s show is a good treat. Last week in episode 99 I had mentioned that I was going to be doing a live broadcast of the show over the weekend in celebrations for the 100th episode. After a few minor technical difficulties I managed to kick the show off right on top of the off grid camper. Why up there you may be asking? Well as I quickly found out the reception out here is not always the best. Researching real quick on YouTube I found a way to make an antenna from a branch and my charging cord for my cell phone. micro machine monster truck lamboIt may work for some people but didn’t for me so I climbed on top of the off grid camper roof. Once I got up there and settled in the Periscope app seemed to work just fine. If you would like to watch the live broadcast videos or see future ones please follow me on my Periscope channel! 🙂

For today’s Time Travel Tuesday segment I dug deep into my memory box for a little toy car I modified as a kid. Flash back to the year of 1987 when Micro Machines were all the rage. Back then I had a number of these micro machines including cars, trucks, and yes monster trucks! I also had a Lamborghini. 🙂 As a kid I was always curious as to how things worked. One day I took one of the monster trucks apart with a philips head screw driver and replaced the body making it a Micro Machine Lamborghini monster truck! This was 29 years ago and I had a lot of fun modifying my new toys. If you would like to hear more please check out today’s Time Travel Tuesday segment. If you are enjoying this new addition to the podcast please let me know and if not that is ok too. Either way i would love to hear from you! As always thank you for listening to the podcast! 🙂

flooded path in the woods
February 12th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s quick video post was made as I headed out for a walk down the path I so fondly speak of. After a solid couple of days and nights of rain the open field and parts of the path were completely flooded! This is a follow up post and video for an episode of Off The Grid Podcast earlier in the week about Bugging Out for the Weekend show number 94. Please enjoy and share if you like the vid. Thanks for watching! 🙂

cold walk in the woods
January 29th, 2016 by Off The Grid

This was some video I took of the first snow fall a couple of weeks ago. Walking down the path I was delighted with the new landscape that seemed to emerge overnight with the recent snowfall the night before. Please keep in mind this video was taken BEFORE the last snow storm hit (mentioned in episodes 91 & 92). As always thank you for taking the time to check these out, watch, share, and listen! ~ Levi 🙂

  • Today’s lesson: Just a little snow can change your landscape. Watch for downed trees and before unseen obstacles.
  • When its unbearable cold outside you better have a way to stay warm or your in trouble.

snake eats spider
January 23rd, 2016 by Off The Grid

Sharing a quick video I was fortunate enough to have been at the right place at the right time. This video was taken of a snake eating a spider out of its web over the summer. Looking back I saw that this post was still a draft! 😛 Enjoy!

Video Post notes from today’s Off The Grid Podcast

  • Today’s lesson: Snakes climb trees so look up once in a while. Don’t get between a spider and its 8 legged meal! lol

hatchet jack the possum
January 15th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you have been following the videos so far and listening to the podcast for a while you have heard me talk about Hatchet Jack the possum. He is a regular just outside my off grid camper. It seems as though he comes out almost nightly to see what is on special at the buffet found in my compost pile of black gold garden soil. This one night I got in kind of late, put my LED headlamp on and as I turned around I saw a small pair od beady little eyes staring at me from high up in the trees. At first I thought it was one of those cute little baby owls I have seen out here. They are small at about the size of a jar of peanut butter. The thing was this was no owl! It was Hatchet Jack the crazy possum I have heard wandering in the woods right close to the off grid camper. He has genuinely scared me a few times but it looks as though this time he climbed a tree to possibly evade one of the local foxes out here. He was up about 20 feet or so off the ground and from the looks of it in a tree that was not that sturdy for the pleasantly plump possum. The next morning Hatchet Jack was gone so I assume he made it safely back down the tree. I am sure we have not heard the last of him and he will soon be back to sample viddles from my compost pile.. the buffet is always good apparently!
