episode 134 video listener feedback
August 18th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If there is one thing I learned from other people learning from my experience living off the grid its that curiosity will be peeked and questions will arise. When I first began this journey toward an off grid lifestyle invariably the next thing after the WHAT?!? factor was the fact that most people had a question or few. Most long time listeners will be no stranger to the story of how I got where I am today.. living in an off grid camper with no power or water. Every once in a while I need to remind myself that chances are new listeners / viewers find the show and as such will have some of the same questions. Why did you choose to go off the grid? What is it like living off grid? What about power? How do you get water? Etc.. Today’s video episode I answer a couple of questions that came in from listeners. Dean from Youtube asked Why did you decide to go off the grid? Another email came in from LeeAnn. She asked if I have the option to park the camper in the woods? Doing so would help to stay 10 degrees or so cooler in the summer months.

You see the thing is that after living this way for a little over a year I look back and realize that in fact I have come a long way. For years I watched countless hours of videos on Youtube, searched the web for resources, spent many a days / evenings in the backyard practicing mini survival skills, and finally mustered up the courage to take that scary leap of faith off grid! It was not easy but I would not trade this unique life experience for anything! One thing that stands out still is that the first 2 – 3 months were a MAJOR adjustment period for me. After living 40 years in the “traditional” on grid suburban lifestyle and then voluntarily choosing this lifestyle some things came to mind. For one thing I found myself honestly questioning my sanity. Amid a serous bit of self examination I came to the conclusion that if I was sane enough to question my actions and give it the time to reach some reasonable answers then I was indeed not out of my gourd! lol If you ask some of the people that are close in my life then you may not get the same answer. Living off grid for the most part can be challenging and both beautifully rewarding at the same time. This lifestyle may not be for everyone.. for me I am quite content and love the soft sweet sounds of mother nature as opposed to the ever intrusive chaos of the concrete jungles our modern society has so quickly adopted.

walking in the creek
August 5th, 2016 by Off The Grid

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to go up north for a family reunion. Now this trip wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies but it was a good time none the less. The 12 hour drive up included an unscheduled and unwanted 2 hour scenic route through the mountains of Pa. Yup you guessed it.. I got lost when the sun went down so I found myself taking the scenic route around the mountains and through towns so small they only had a couple of traffic lights. It felt good to finally reach my destination and I went straight to bed. The next day family reunion activities were in full swing. The food was excellent and everyone had a good time catching up on how things have been. After we all ate it was time for games like trivia, toss grandmas purse, and everyone favorite “dirty” bingo! Next we had the family auction. Yes it was a lot of fun and I really look forward to going each year when I can.

Every once in a while a long road trip to visit family in Pennsylvania is a great reset for me. Despite my humble abode (the off grid camper) I am still very much a part of this “normal” suburban society on a daily basis with work and all. Going to visit my family up north reminds me of just how much a difference there is in culture from region to region. For better or worse there is always something to learn and life to experience. Up there I was reminded of what small town America is all about. People in general seemed to be nicer, have more manors, and an overall better set of ethics quite honestly. Just an observation. 🙂

vdeo show 130
July 21st, 2016 by Off The Grid

Living off grid has taught me a lot. Sometimes in our busy day to day lives we can forget to appreciate the little things in life. I invite you to take a few moments out of your day to watch today’s video and simply slow down. Enjoy a couple of the simple moments that I observed out here in and around the off grid camper. Join me as we check out the wasp farm right outside my kitchen window. Next we step outside to look up at the treeline with a beautiful blue sky backdrop as the birds chirp happily on this fine summer day. Then walk with me out to view the off grid garden marveling at just how wild the okra, bean, pickling cucumber, and tomato plants are getting! Yup. It occur to me that I still find myself stopping once in a while to look around to enjoy the little things out here. Mother nature has so many amazing critters, creatures, and insects all around us. All we need to do is stop to appreciate it every now and then. 🙂

*** STAY TUNED at the end of the video for BONUS footage of a Snake Shedding Its Skin!! ***

Join me today for a walk around the camper to see this years off grid hugelkultur garden. If you have been enjoying the audio podcasts this video edition is for you! solar panels for off grid camper
May 13th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s video podcast looks back to the early months out here when I was installing Solar Panels for the Off Grid Camper. If you have ever been interested in alternative energy, generating your own power from the sun, or solar panels in general then today’s show should be entertaining. One of the main things to remember when hooking up solar panels is that you are working with DC (direct current) as opposed to AC (alternating current). Most grid tied houses run off of AC.. this is why most of the electrical appliances you buy are 120 volt. A lot of times when you are powering an RV, or in this case a camper DC can be a better option especially if you have access to solar panels.

Video Post notes from today’s Off The Grid Podcast

  • Today’s lesson: Think outside the box and consider alternative energy like solar.

repair camper-roof part 3
May 7th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Today’s video episode of the Off The Grid Podcast ventures back up the ladder to the top of the camper. I was at it again working on repairing the off grid camper roof trying to keep the rain out. If you have been following along the last two videos I removed the heavy caked up layer of old tar and then applied a few new layers! First it took one good day to remove all of the old crusty curled up tar from this old vintage Coachmen camper roof. Then I put about a 3 gallon bucket worth of tar along any seams or holes with a trowel. Next up after getting down to the galvanized metal I rolled rubberized “stuff” on the roof as a base. In case you missed it please check out Episode 115 to watch PART 1 and also Episode 117 to see PART 2 of this video series on repairing the off grid camper roof. As always thanks for watching!

fixing camper roof video
April 29th, 2016 by Off The Grid

Last week in episode 115 of the Off The Grid Podcast I posted PART 1 of this 3 part video series of fixing the camper roof. Today for your viewing pleasure we look back to last year once again as I was working at repairing the off grid camper roof. As you can tell this really is an old camper. The 78 Coachmen is indeed a classic and an antique.. although it has obviously seen better days. lol None the less these video episodes of the podcast show you just what a journey it has been on my way from the suburbs to living off the grid. The old Coachmen was well build and the saying “they don’t make them like they used to” is very true in this case. Despite being almost 40 years old the pull behind camper was in decent shape for its age. The roof still needed to be replaced though. Anyway please watch the video if you have not already and if you have questions, comments, or ideas please feel free to email me! Thank you for listening and watching the videos! 🙂

rat snake on wood pile
April 27th, 2016 by Off The Grid

If you have ever worked some long hours for any extended period of time and found yourself stopping once in a while realizing it was time for a day off then hopefully you can identify with today’s podcast. Last fall I started working a second job and I was very grateful to do so. Fast forward to two seasons later with this being springtime garden season and I am ready to take a break. A break can be different things to different people. In this case I simply want a break from the normal work routine to work on getting this years garden going! Earlier this morning I found myself still with a little bit of a smile at the good fortune over the last couple of weeks. The thing is a lot of times we may find ourselves trying to stay positive when life seems to be against us. Then there are other times when things just seem to go your way which makes for an awesome day or few! Thanks to the generosity of my brother ( I still need to come up with a cool nick name for him btw), the generosity of listeners like you (speaking of the recent Gift of GoPro from Listeners), the fortunate opportunity and generosity of a good friend with my new 4 wheel drive I am really enjoying life right now. If you missed it.. THANK YOU to all! 🙂

A few days ago I opened the door to the off grid camper one morning to a surprise guest down by the wood pile. About a 5 – 6 foot long rat snake had made its way just a few feed away from my doorstep! FYI it is a great idea to use a walking stick everywhere you go just in case you run into a snake. The walking stick I like was found on a walk early this past winter. In case you are wondering the really cool looking “canes” with vines around them in the video are canes and walking sticks in the making. They have really great character. I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for listening / watching! 🙂
